02-07-10 Who Dat?!

"Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Who dat?!" is the chant of all New Orleanians when talking about or cheering for their football hometeam, The Saints. So, for those of you who may not know, my whole family is from New Orleans. I'm the only one in my immediate family not born there. Because of this, just about my whole family, both my immediate family here in California and my extended family in New Orleans and Mississippi are HUGE Saints fans. For years this has been a rather heartbreaking team to root for. But through all the bad years my family remained loyal. I even had a Saints nightshirt when I was little. My brothers had Saints t-shirts and hats as did my dad and uncles.

One year when I was 8 or 9 I think, the Saints had a pretty good season and so when we were there for our yearly Christmas vacation visit we were treated to a whole city with "Saints Superbowl Madness". They had even taken the Monkees' song "I'm a Believer" and remade it into a song about believing the Saints could get to the Super Bowl. Please remember that at this time the Superdome in New Orleans was still where all the Superbowls were held so having the Saints in a Superbowl would have been in their hometown on top of things! Oh the hopefulness. I think that by the time we got back to California the Saints had stopped winning and, unfortunately they did not get to the Super Bowl.

But in recent years they have been coming along and improving year by year. This year they started out strong and stayed undefeated for quite some time. Even though they did have a couple losses they still managed to get to the Super Bowl! This was the most exciting season for them that I can remember, but then again, I don't really follow football much anymore. Until this season. It was hard not to fall under the spell of the excitement that was created in my house by the Saints being undefeated for so long. So, I started to watch the games when I could. They were always pretty exciting and I was always really happy when they won! For those of you who don't know, I prefer to root for underdogs and well, the Saints are true underdogs and were due for a win like this! Even Curtis became a Saints fan after hearing my family go on and on about it for so long!

So, today I had a matinee for Jake's Women. The game started while I was at the theater but Curtis was watching the game at my brother's house with my family so he kept me updated via text. At first the Saints were losing. Not good.

But then I put on my Fleur de Lis (the Saint's logo and also the symbol of French Aristocracy that is all over New Orleans) hoodie and Curtis texted me that the Saints had gotten a field goal. Right before he left to pick me up at half time they scored another field goal. We got back to the house just as the 3rd quarter was starting and they quickly took the lead! It was a roller coaster for a bit after that including an interception by Porter of the Saints where he then ran the ball in for a touchdown taking the lead again! In the end the Saints really just dominated the second half and won 31-17! Very exciting game!

I'm very happy for the Saints. They totally deserved this win! And my family is over the moon happy. I'm really only sad that my Uncle Francis didn't live to see this game. He'd have loved it too. Stupid cancer. :(

All in all it's been a great weekend! My shows all went very well, I spent some time with Curtis and Frankie and my family and THE SAINTS WON THE SUPER BOWL! Doesn't get much better than that. :) Have a great week everyone!
