01-25-10 On the Road Again

We woke up on Monday later than planned due to going to bed at about 3 am the night before. Luckily so did Ray, the Fotokem rep we were supposed to have an 8 am breakfast meeting with. So, we pushed it back to 9 am and Curtis went to take a shower. Here's the good thing of having 10+ people in one condo it's waaayyyy cheaper than normal. Here's the bad thing about having 10+ people in a condo it's waaayyyy hard to organize bathroom times. ;-) Still we were lucky to be allowed to crash on the floor for a night and take up more space and bathroom time from the people who were there all week, so we were grateful for that! So, uh, Curtis ended up having to skip his shower and just run out to the meeting without me. I will not go without showering especially when I need to exfoliate the dry skin falling off my body and face due to the Utah weather. As I mentioned before, Utah weather hates my skin, or rather my skin hates Utah weather. Anyway, yeah I had two red, flaky patches of skin on my face and there was no way I was going out until they had been gently exfoliated and re-super-moisturized. So, I stayed behind and waited to shower.

By the time I was able to be showered and dressed Curtis was done with his meeting. I was STARVING and we wanted to try and get some movie tickets changed and so we headed over to the Sundance Headquarters. We couldn't change or movie tickets so we kept the ones we had. I refuse to go to a film festival and NOT see any movies so I was determined to see at least ONE while we were there. Normally we see a lot. Last year we saw 12. And all of them were good! This year because of our tight schedule that was not to be. Sigh. We were able to get tickets for a panel on new ways of distributing films so, all was not lost.

After that we stopped at a little cafe set up at the Headquarters. I grabbed a bagel, some yogurt and a coffee and as I was choosing my bagel Curtis whispered in my ear "Oh...There's Parker Posey" because I am a pro at this I just nodded and did not look for her right away. A couple seconds later I non chalantly looked around and yes, just a few feet away from us there was Parker Posey sitting at a table chatting to some guy about business stuff. She seemed relaxed and upbeat. I didn't want to stare so I didn't, but it was kind of hard. She is the indie queen and well, I really wanted to grab a seat near her and have a gabfest. Instead I stole a few subdued glances and then we took our coffee and bagel and went to find a seat elsewhere. We ended up a floor below her but she was sitting next to a railing and so I was able to sneak a few peeks still. :) Later she walked past me as I stuffed bagel in my mouth on her way out. My photo for today, above, is of me sitting in the same seat that Parker Posey had sat in. I am hoping some of her indie queen cred rubs off on me. :)

Then it was onto the movie. It was called "The Imperialists Are Still Alive". It was made my a woman and I liked certain aspects of it. I think I liked it better than Curtis because it wasn't really either of our cups of tea filmwise, but I appreciated the female power aspect of it. I feel like it was well written and had a good message to get out, but it was a little on the dark side. It was, however definitely a film festival indie movie in tone. So, I was glad we got to see it.

Then we had to rush to the film distribution panel. We barely made it! Ashleigh and James were there so we grabbed seats by them and the panel started. About half way through Ashleigh and James had to leave to get ready for an event that Ashleigh was throwing on Main Street. About three quarters of the way through Curtis realized that he wasn't learning anything new and we were also supposed to be at the event Ashleigh was throwing so, we headed out as well. To the panels credit, I (the newbie of the group) DID learn some stuff. So, it was not a waste of time for me.

We then went to lunch and we decided on the same little cafe at the film headquarters. We had some really good corn chowder and salad. On the way we stopped to take a photo of us and the snow.

That was also when I took the photo of me in Parker Posey's seat (seen at the top of this blog). Then we ran back to Main Street for Ashleigh's "Connector's Networking Event". It was in a great little bar and we had a great time meeting with other people in the industry. I hit it off with a guy from LA who is also a dog lover and we talked about Frankie and his Great Dane and about my pitbull documentary.

After a while we had to go since we were getting back on the road to come home that night. So we rushed back to the condo to grab our bags and throw em in the car.

When we got into the car and started driving Curtis realized my coffee cup from the day before was still in the car. He went to dump it out and realized it was frozen solid! Hahahaha!

After a while I napped while Curtis drove. Curtis stopped at the Flying J rest stop/gas station we like and we got some food for dinner. I got a surprisingly good salad with cranberries and blue cheese and walnuts and some chopped raw veggies. Curtis got a turkey sandwhich. We also got coffee. At the next stop in St. George Utah, we switched and I became the driver. I drove from there through Nevada. I have to say that I really enjoyed the view of the Vegas lights as we came over the hill towards it. So, yeah, I made it to the State Line and then we stopped for gas and Curtis took over driving again.

I fell asleep almost instantly and was awoken a brief amount of time later just outside of Baker when we were pulled over. No, we were not speeding. No, we were not swerving. So, why were we pulled over? Because Curtis had not moved over a lane when he passed a highway patrolman who was in the process of ticketing someone else he had pulled over. Apparently, this is a new California law that nobody bothered to mention to the public. Funny how they do stuff like that isn't it? Odd how we might think that laws like that are mostly for revenue raising. Anyway, I understand the point of the law but you'd think they might have mentioned this when it went into effect back in January 09. The patrolman was very nice though and even he said that it was not publicized, so, after informing us of the law, he let us go with a warning. Whew! (In case you don't know the point of the law is to give cops, ambulances, firetrucks, etc... an extra lane next to the shoulder to maneuver while assisting or ticketing someone, but he did not say what to do if it is not easy or possible to safely move to another lane before passing them... so, I guess you'll have to look that up.)

After that there were no more incidents and Curtis got us home by 5 am on the dot.

And that is the end of out road trip! All in all it was a great trip! We met some great people both in the condo we stayed at and while out and about. We had some adventures and we got through it all without killing each other. ;-)
