01-09-10 Attack of the Pinkeye!
So, today I woke up, really early and got ready to go to my acting group meeting. As I was walking out the door I stopped to make sure Curtis was up. Well, he woke up with the dreaded pinkeye. Ewwww. Pinkeye. I hate pinkeye. I never had it as a kid but I did get it two or three times in my 20s when I was waiting tables. It is by far the most aggravating mild ailment. Because of how contagious it is, it is a royal pain in the ass to deal with. Though really, when all is said and done, it is really not a big deal kind of illness, it just requires a hell of a lot of work to decontaminate things. Sometimes more than once. And the hand washing... oh the hand washing. My immediate thought was to send Curtis back to his place until he was better because, as I mentioned, Pinkeye is contagious. HIGHLY contagious. And something I find vile and awful. But then I remembered, oh yeah, I love this guy and we plan on getting our own place together soon as well as getting married in the future and well, I believe that is says in the vows "in sickness and health" so, I figured I better suck it up and deal with it because eventually we won't have separate homes to retreat to when sick. And yeah, like I said, I do happen to love the guy. :)
So, I cancelled on my acting group and stayed home to help Curtis find a clinic because when you don't have insurance trying to find a clinic that is affordable and convenient is like trying to find the holy grail. The last time I had pinkeye I had no insurance and so I had to go to a low income clinic. The only one I could find was a couple cities over and was well, less than ideal. I had to wait for hours after filling out what seemed like a phonebook size stack of papers. While I was doing this many children ran around like screaming banshees. Several sick people chose me to sit next to while hacking up lungs. I, who was infected with a highly contagious ailment was afraid to touch much of anything. The people around me with plague seemed less concerned and spread their germs without regard to the other people trapped in the stuffy, airless, over crowded waiting room. After I was seen it cost somewhere around $100 or more. Another clinic I went to for one of the other times I had pinkeye (being a server is dangerous work, please tip well) when I didn't have insurance cost me $200. Both those experiences were years ago so it might cost even more now.
Luckily I had recently heard that the "CVS Minute Clinics" could diagnose and treat a lot of common, simple health problems. So, instead of the exhaustive search for a nearby low cost medical clinic, I had Curtis look on the CVS website and find a minute clinic we could go to. We found one and yes, they can treat pinkeye! Score! So, off we went. It was a really good experience. The Clinic we went to was in a very nice CVS. You sign in at a computer and then wait your turn. Because it is just for simple things each person is seen relatively quickly. We only had to wait about 30 minutes or so and in the meantime we had a whole CVS to wander about. Including a full magazine rack with all the current magazines! After Curtis was seen there was a little confusion about his prescription which took a little longer than it should but all in all it was a really good process. We got out for the clinic visit and the meds for just under $100. Not bad!
So, that was my new thing today. Trying out the CVS Minute Clinics. I don't know if they are all as nice as the one we went to, but it was a very nice thing to learn about! When you don't have insurance those minor things like Pinkeye can be a real nuisance. It was nice to have it handled quickly and without much hassle or cost.
Curtis is doing much better. I've done laundry about 800 times the last two days but, now I think I am done for a bit! Yay!
